The rain is great for the plants but not for people and the forecast wind will make it even more unpleasant. So today's working bee is postponed until next Sunday, 29 January. Stay warm. (Image from - https://earth.nullschool.net/)

The first Sunday working bee this year (8 January) tackled the weed and irrigation issues in both our new planting and the old Project Gold planting. Plants at Korimako Corner are surviving well, mostly. The sun+wind evapotranspiration on some days has really put them under stress and some are showing signs of their inability to transport minerals from the soil to their growing tips. At least one has given up the fight, in addition to several kowhai that earlier on objected strongly to transplanting. Thanks to all those vollies who have kept the plants watered over the last weeks. A new scheduling system is being tested to see if it will work better and give everyone a chance to engage in some quiet reflection time while keeping our little bundles of photosynthetic joy alive and well. Our native plants are not the only ones to survive the changeable weather. Weeds never sleep and the first working bees this year will be busy catching up on the last couple of weeks. And pricking out newly germinated seedlings needs to be done. And there is a shade sail and windbreak to erect. And an irrigation system that needs maintenance. And a tunnel house that needs relining. And we still need to get out into the hills to look for more seeds. A busy time! The first Thursday working bee was THURSDAY, 5 January, 1000-1300. And the FIRST SUNDAY working bee is on 8 January, 1000-1300. A few shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows would be good for this one. Regular working bees are on: THURSDAYS from 10am to 1pm in summer and 11am to 1pm in winter; Every second SUNDAY at the above times (next one is on 22 January). There are community plantings to be weeded, and in some cases watered, whenever you are nearby:
